The Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory has been instrumental in initiating groundbreaking studies of fish passage through hydraulic turbines. From these studies, new technologies for attracting, diverting, or guiding migratory fish through a dam and powerhouse were developed, including vertical barrier screens for turbine intakes and submerged sluiceways. The Dissolved Gas Abatement Studies (DGAS) have provided design guidance for spillway and stilling basin modifications to lower dissolved gas levels, while improving fish egress and ingress. Studies have investigated air entrainment, turbine passage issues, and developed structural modifications for fish passage for Corps of Engineers' dams on the Columbia and Snake Rivers. Numerical modeling in conjunction with physical modeling has provided guidance on the movement of migratory fish through or around spillways and powerhouses.
